Beginning Bookbinding
This introduction to hand bookbinding covers the fundamental tools and materials as well as the different varieties of sewing and construction techniques. Starting with pamphlets, work toward the binding of two hardcover books. Advanced students are invited to use the class as an open studio with an opportunity to review skills.

Pysanky (Ukrainian Easter Eggs)
Create brilliantly colored, intricate pattern on eggs using this Ukrainian technique. Draw the designs with molten wax and over-dye to create many colors. Bring two used candles, a pair of rubber gloves and six raw eggs. Dyes, tools and directions are supplied to enthusiasts to continue working at home. |

This course will investigate hinge binding methods used in constructing flexible sculptural books for classroom as well as for personal use. In addition there will be hands-on lessons creating painterly paste paper for pages and staining Tyvek for covers. Demonstrations and discussion will include a variety of approaches for adding other elements to both the inside and outside of the books, such as creating windows or adding depth. The workshop will include a critique. |

Discussions and demonstrations will include variations of each technique for possible interdisciplinary use and literacy through book arts in the classroom. A box will house your collection of book models and serve as a reference tool for future projects. The workshop will end with a critique.
