Designer folds
Join in a free-for-all, hands-on frenzy of folding. Learn how to punch up your ads, displays, cards, packages and exhibits by folding the paper. Learn techniques and applications to go from flat to fascinating. We'll look at a variety of folded examples and spend time making lots of models for future reference.

Ethiopian binding with satchel
The Copts were an early christian sect in Ethiopia. Their hand written copies of the Gospel were very precious to them. When on pilgrimages, the book was protected from the desert elements in a special case. Construct a classic Ethiopian book with wooden covers and make a satchel to hold it. The satchel is based on historical drawings, with an inner and outer leather case and shoulder strap.

Vademeicum
The project can be more or less involved to fit time frame. Vademecum means "go
with me" in Latin. You might think of this structure as the forerunner
of the modern PDA, since it can store a lot of information in a small amount
of space. The book has tooled leather covers and a braided thong loop for
hanging it from one's belt. The folded pages open out upside down to display
information that can be read while still attached to the wearer. This book
was used by doctors back in the middle ages. The pages held information

Flexible sculptural books
Use pleated paper window shades to create an innovative and extremely mobile
flag book, to hold business cards or mementos. Also, make a wedge-shaped

The Exquisite Corpse
Print and bind a class edition of an exquisite corpse book. We will print the "corpses" down and dirty using quick primitive printing technique which can be embellished later. Each student will leave the class with a book containing prints from each member of the class.

Crossed structure
This unique book form is expandable and lies flat when opened. The book is sewn on straps woven through a double cover. We will construct this book as an album, including envelope pages, enclosure, and encapsulation pages as well as map folds to accommodate oversize additions to the album. Compensation will be covered although this particular structure eliminates the need for compensating stubs.

Finding closure
Experiment with a variety of methods for creating closures for your books.
We will play with creating hinges, hasps, clasps, fasteners, and so
forth to give your books that sense of mystery and privacy. You will
make a batch of models and a box in which to keep them. Bring along
a book of your own that needs an interesting closure and we'll figure

Leather Coptic
The Ethiopian (Coptic) binding style was developed as early as the 4th century and has stood the test of time. The elegant structure opens a wide range of possibilities for the beginning and advanced binder. You will make a modification of the sewn boards binding using your own personally tooled and punched leather for the covers. Your finished book will include a leather closure. No previous experience necessary, but good hand skills and comfort with a needle and thread will be helpful.

Hinge binding
