In this workshop you will produce more than a dozen model booklets using a variety of simple binding techniques including folding, sewing and stab bindings. The basic techniques taught in this workshop will provide you with a good foundation on which to build more bookbinding skills. Examples of books using the model techniques will be available. An origami box will house your collection of book models and can serve as a reference tool for future projects.

Decorative papers have enhanced books, boxes and objets d’art for centuries. Explore the world of decorative paper techniques with me. Create a variety of patterns using paste, stamps, wax, dyes, and bubbles. Create “aged” papers with coffee, tea, salt and shoe polish. Unlock the secrets to Japanese momigami, suminagashi, and shibori. Expect to make up to 20 different sheets of decorative paper in various weights and sizes for your paper projects.

Create charming small prints using a pasta machine for a press! We will use several readily available materials to make printing plates (such as the inside of milk cartons), then ink and print them through the pasta machine. The prints will be perfect for framing as is, or can be used to make cards, book plates or other unique creative pieces. This is a good opportunity to try out printing without investing in specialized equipment. Working small allows time for experimentation and testing without the added stress of handling large elements.

Split Spine Binding
In this workshop, you will craft a striking hardcover book featuring a decorative catch stitch along the spine. A paper spine piece serves as the sewing support and neatly conceals the book’s spine. The binding is completed with covered boards wrapped in beautiful stained Tyvek that you produce.
During the workshop, you’ll learn how to determine accurate measurements, properly prepare your materials, and map out your sewing pattern. The finished book will measure 4¼ x 5½ x 1 inches.
This workshop is especially well suited for beginners, and gives you the knowledge and confidence to create a beautiful handmade book.
The course is open to all levels.

Medieval Binding Workshop
The first pictorial form of the book of the heart shows up in a C.1500 painting by an anonymous Flemish Artist. The painting shows a man holding an opened, heart-shaped book. The book is covered with red leather and, when closed, is half of the heart shape.
We will make our own version of the Medieval Book of the Heart. We will sew the shaped pages onto cords that will attach to two wooden covers. Then, we’ll cover the boards with leather and embellish with gold foil or blind tooling.
This is an intense, more advanced workshop. Some binding experience is necessary.

Keep it all together! This class is inspired by the innovative folded forms of Hedi Kyle, renowned genius designer of folded forms. Many of her forms use folds to wrap, enclose, or contain ephemeral items. During the workshop, enjoy learning several of her iconic structures: Blizzard Book, Crown Book, Panorama book, and more as time allows. These origami-like structures are satisfying to make and mostly non-adhesive. Some experience working with paper (folding and finding paper grain) is helpful, but not required.

“New” Oriental Binding
The “New” Oriental style binding is actually a Western version of the classical Chinese and Japanese stab binding. It uses hard covers with leather or cloth, contrary to its counterparts, but the form and its aesthetics are preserved. In this contemporary modification, pages are sewn to stubs that stabilize and become integral to the whole book. This version allows for endless possibilities in the use of design and materials.
