Waveland Studio offers a wide variety of classes. With her degree in Art Education, Peggy Johnston (proprietor of Waveland Studio) is comfortable working with adults, gifted and talented students, at-risk students in high school, and young students as well. She enjoys working with the teachers to design special interdisciplinary projects.

Designer folds
Join in a free-for-all, hands-on frenzy of folding. Learn how to punch up your ads, displays, cards, packages and exhibits by folding the paper. Learn techniques and applications to go from flat to fascinating. We'll look at a variety of folded examples and spend time making lots of models for future reference.

Ethiopian binding with satchel
The Copts were an early christian sect in Ethiopia. Their hand written copies of the Gospel were very precious to them. When on pilgrimages, the book was protected from the desert elements in a special case. Construct a classic Ethiopian book with wooden covers and make a satchel to hold it. The satchel is based on historical drawings, with an inner and outer leather case and shoulder strap.

Vademeicum
The project can be more or less involved to fit time frame. Vademecum means "go with me" in Latin. You might think of this structure as the forerunner of the modern PDA, since it can store a lot of information in a small amount of space. The book has tooled leather covers and a braided thong loop for hanging it from one's belt. The folded pages open out upside down to display information that can be read while still attached to the wearer. This book was used by doctors back in the middle ages. The pages held information and charts to help with diagnoses. Examples: Entries From the Batlog

Flexible sculptural books
Use pleated paper window shades to create an innovative and extremely mobile flag book, to hold business cards or mementos. Also, make a wedge-shaped piano-hinge structure suitable for use as an album. If time permits, we will discuss and make other models. Examples: Business Card Flag Book
Materials Fee: *This workshop can be presented in one day by choosing only one structure. $35.00 covers all materials for one book. For a two book class the price is $65.00.

Needles, scissors, knife, metal ruler, cutting mat, button or other disc-shaped item for closure. If you have a special decorative paper you would like to use for the covers, bring it along. Cutting Mat, paper cutter. All other materials will be provided.

Skinlike and textural paste papers
Create paste papers that resemble animal skin or are highly textured, using bottle brushes, found objects, and even your fingers.

Japanese stitching
Explore the classic Japanese stitches and other stab bindings. We will combine beautiful materials with decorative sewing patterns to produce lovely little books. We will make several books using a variety of sewing techniques and make a box to hold your examples. Along with the basic techniques we will explore some more unusual processes, such as making our own book cloth and backing thin papers for use on covers.

15 Books in a Box
Learn 15 simple binding techniques including folded forms, stab, and sewn bindings. Make an origami box to hold all your bindings. The box of bindings then serves as a reference too.

The Exquisite Corpse
Print and bind a class edition of an exquisite corpse book. We will print the "corpses" down and dirty using quick primitive printing technique which can be embellished later. Each student will leave the class with a book containing prints from each member of the class.

Needles, scissors, knife, cutting mat, glue brush, assorted watercolors, markers, colored pencils and so forth for embellishing the printed pages. All other materials will be provided. cutting mats and paper cutter

Clamshell book with a box
Class can be adjusted to meet age group skills. This book form is sometimes called an origami book or lotus fold . We will create a limited edition book containing self-portrait collages. Make use of the copier and various colors to embellish the pages of this active, sculptural book.

Crossed structure
This unique book form is expandable and lies flat when opened. The book is sewn on straps woven through a double cover. We will construct this book as an album, including envelope pages, enclosure, and encapsulation pages as well as map folds to accommodate oversize additions to the album. Compensation will be covered although this particular structure eliminates the need for compensating stubs.

Finding closure
Experiment with a variety of methods for creating closures for your books. We will play with creating hinges, hasps, clasps, fasteners, and so forth to give your books that sense of mystery and privacy. You will make a batch of models and a box in which to keep them. Bring along a book of your own that needs an interesting closure and we'll figure one out. Examples: Business Card Flag Book, Smashed Pennies Marshmallow Book

Metal ruler, scissors, pliers, needles, and so forth--the usual tools of the trade. Include in your supplies any interesting beads, discs, coins, wire, assorted cords, or other materials that may be used in making the closures. Cutting mats and paper cutter.

36 Shot album
Make a great little album that will hold 36 photos. Pages are sewn to an accordion spine supported by straps. Extra pages for notes and a pair of envelopes for what-nots will be added to the book.

Secret Room Book
Create a book containing a secret room from a single sheet of paper. Furnish the room and illustrate the text with doors, windows and furniture. *NOTE Class can be adapted to any age group.

Quickie Bindings
Class is adaptable. Make a series of quick and easy binding models for future reference. The binding structures include loop, assorted pamphlet stitches, accordion, adhesive, matchbook, fan, and Japanese techniques. The number and type of bindings included in the workshop will vary according to age of participants and time available.

The Ultimate Accordion
The accordion, or concertina, is a versatile and exciting book form. Your ultimate accordion will include additions and variations on the traditional form: sewn signatures, accordion in accordions, photo frames, off set folding and much more.

Bring along any special papers and small mementos that you may wish to include in your book. Bone folder, metal ruler, scissors, darning needle, glue stick, and bone folder. Paper cutter, cutting mats or scraps of mat board for cutting surface.

Amazing Maze Books
Make a batch of single sheet folded booklets. Various folds and cuts determine the size and shape of the finished booklet. We will create stars, snails caterpillars, flutter books, puzzle books, books within books and much more. *NOTE Class can be adapted to age and skill level of participants.

Keepsake flag book
Create a fabulously flexible, sculptural book using such things as window shades, tape, and stamp envelopes. The book will be capable of containing your thoughts and the ephemera that goes with them. Bring along any small flat objects that you'd like to add to the book.

Romancing the Accordion Variable
Learn about the myriad variations of the accordion fold. We will make models of several (or a lot) of accordion fold books. We will experiment with off-setting, cutting, interweaving, sculpting, multiplying, sewing and more in this class.

Bookbinding basics
This course is an introduction to the pleasures of hand bookbinding. It covers the fundamental tools and materials as well as varieties of sewing and construction. Starting with pamphlets, it works towards the binding of two hardcover books. This class prepares participants to explore bookbinding on their own or to continue with advanced studies.

Book Arts Open Studio
This opportunity is in conjunction with bookbinding basics. Participants are able to either participate in the basics class as a review, or to work on their own projects. The open studio will give participants a place to work and Peggy will be available to provide feedback and technical advise.
 
Sketchbooks & Journals
Why would you want to make your own books? Because it's an incredibly cool thing to do. We'll make special books, not your run of the mill store-bought stuff. We'll use wonderful materials to create books made by you, personally, for your own special uses. This short course will introduce you to the tools, materials and techniques of hand book binding. We'll begin with a single sheet and progress to a multi section book. see above
 
Clamshell book with box #2
This can be lengthened to two days. This book form is sometimes called an origami book or lotus book. Also, it is currently marketed in kit form as a folding scrapbook. We will make the book and its box out of paste papers you create in the workshop. The result will be a beautiful active sculptural book approximately 6" square. Examples: Lotus Book in a Box

Multi-purpose post bound album
half day For the absolute beginner."Students will make a screw post album suitable for use as a photo album, guest book or scrap book. We will discuss mounting techniques and binding variations. Each student will complete one 8" x 51/2" album covered with your choice of beautiful decorative paper.

Decorative paper (not gift wrap) at least 11" x 17", scissors, metal ruler, cutting mat, craft knife with snap off blades, 1/4" hole punch. If you have a bone folder, bring it along, too. All other materials will be provided .

The Artful Office
Get organized with elegant office supplies. The secret to the fabulous material for the projects is ordinary freezer paper. We'll make a couple of portfolios, a business card holder and pen caddy. Examples: Business Card Flag Book

Two sheets of Kozo ("rice" paper) or other thin paper sized about 22" x 30". Also bring an iron, craft knife, ruler, bone folder and cutting mat. If you like, include an antique button and some coordinating cord to tie your portfolios shut. Freezer paper, Kraft paper, glue and brushes. Paper punches or awls.

Botanical Prints
Print your own exquisite botanicals as wall art, note cards or gift enclosures using ordinary ink pads. watercolors, and leaves from your home or garden.

Long Stitch
Learn to make your own multi-signature text block using a technique found in European ledgers from the late middle ages. Continue the old time theme by using walnut husk dye and paste wax on the cover. See examples: Long Stitch Journals

Single Signature Quarter bound Book
Make a real book. A solid book with a cloth binding and a hard cover, just like journals you've spent big bucks on in the past. Discover the craftsperson which lies within you.

Leather Coptic
The Ethiopian (Coptic) binding style was developed as early as the 4th century and has stood the test of time. The elegant structure opens a wide range of possibilities for the beginning and advanced binder. You will make a modification of the sewn boards binding using your own personally tooled and punched leather for the covers. Your finished book will include a leather closure. No previous experience necessary, but good hand skills and comfort with a needle and thread will be helpful.

Modified Crossed Structure
Create a lovely small leather book which will lay flat when opened. We will line the leather with beautiful decorative paper , then sew the gatherings of pages to specially designed straps. Hold the straps in place with handmade buttons for a wonderful finishing touch.

Phony Book Box
Inspired by a centuries old container, this box is made up of two units: an inner box and outer case.You will use beautiful decorative marbled and handmade papers for the case. The inner container will be constructed from heavy cover stock.

Mylar House Box
This fascinating box is based on a flea market find made of old postcards. Ours is updated with sanded mylar panels that are stained with acrylic paints before assembling. Add a light to the translucent box for a magical effect. Scissors, awl.

Piano Hinge binding
Spend an evening making a variation of the piano hinge binding. The flexible, sculptural took is teardrop-shaped, with an extra thick spine and purposely warped covers. This structure is an innovative photo album or journal that can also be enjoyed as a sculptural object. The finished size of the book will be approximately 5 1/2" square. Examples: Piano Hinge Spine

Scissors, craft knife, cutting mat, bone folder, and ruler. If you have a pair of pruning shears, bring it. If you have more than one pair, bring it too, to share. Material fee covers all papers, glue and rods.
